For the last 25 years, the polycarbonate industry has treated Ultraviolet (UV) radiation as an enemy to be blocked. We spent decades perfecting UV-absorbers and co-extrusion cap layers just to prevent sheets from yellowing and turning brittle.
But in 2026, simply "blocking" UV is a waste of energy.
At Bakway, our R&D team has just commercialized a disruptive Photo-Convertible (Spectrum-Shifting) Polycarbonate Sheet. We aren't just protecting the polymer anymore; we are harvesting the sun's most destructive wavelengths and converting them into fuel for your crops. If you are running a high-yield commercial greenhouse or a medicinal plant facility, this is the most significant leap in glazing tech since the invention of multiwall structure.
Standard greenhouse films and sheets use UV-absorbers that convert UV energy into wasted heat. Our new photo-convertible technology utilizes a precision-engineered masterbatch of fluorescent molecules embedded in the co-extruded outer layer.
These molecules absorb photons in the 280nm - 390nm (UV) range—wavelengths that typically cause plant stress and material degradation—and re-emit them in the 600nm - 700nm (Red/Far-Red) spectrum.
In physics, this is called the Stoke’s Shift. We are essentially "recycling" high-energy, harmful light and down-converting it into the exact peak of the McCree action spectrum where photosynthesis is most efficient.
Plants aren't color-blind. They have specific photoreceptors like phytochromes that respond to the ratio of Red to Far-Red light. By shifting UV into Red light, our panels provide:
Increased Biomass: More photons in the 660nm range directly correlate to higher rates of carbon fixation.
Accelerated Growth Cycles: In trials with leafy greens and strawberries, we’ve seen harvest cycles shortened by 7-15% because the plants are literally getting "extra" light that didn't exist before.
Enhanced Secondary Metabolites: By optimizing the spectral quality, we can trigger better flowering, larger fruit brix (sugar content), and higher terpene profiles in high-value crops.
You can't just throw spectrum-shifting dyes into a standard extruder and hope for the best. These additives are thermally sensitive and expensive.
We utilize our 5-layer co-extrusion lines to isolate the photo-convertible chemistry into a specific, optimized skin layer. This prevents the additives from degrading during the melt process and ensures a uniform "Quantum Yield" across the entire 2.1-meter width of the sheet.
Combined with our Permanent Anti-Drip (Hydrophilic) technology, we ensure that condensation doesn't interfere with the spectral shifting. You get a clean, high-energy light environment that glass simply cannot replicate.
Standard PC sheets are passive barriers. Our Photo-Convertible sheets are active growth components.
100% Virgin Covestro/SABIC Resin: Ensures base clarity and structural longevity.
U-Value Efficiency: Maintains the 1.1 - 1.5 W/m²K insulation you expect from high-end Multiwall.
Yield Gains: Initial data suggests an 8% to 15% increase in total biomass yield compared to standard clear PC, depending on the crop species.
The era of "passive" greenhouses is over. It’s time to start hacking the sun.
