Stop Cooling the Sun: Why IR-Reflective Polycarbonate is the New Baseline for Commercial Horticulture

The "Greenhouse Effect" is a fundamental physics principle that is currently bankrupting commercial growers. In a standard clear multiwall polycarbonate installation, the material is a passive victim of solar radiation: it allows shortwave radiation (light) to enter, but traps the longwave radiation (heat) inside. By mid-afternoon in a 2026 summer, the cooling load required to maintain a 24°C environment inside a 10,000 sqm facility often exceeds the profit margin of the crop itself.

The solution isn't "more shading." The solution is Spectral Engineering. If you are still specifying standard clear sheets for large-scale commercial horticulture, you are building a thermal trap, not a growth environment. Here is the technical reality of managing Solar Heat Gain Coefficient (SHGC) without sacrificing Photosynthetically Active Radiation (PAR).

The NIR Conflict: Light vs. Heat

Standard polycarbonate is transparent to the entire solar spectrum from 350nm to 2500nm. However, plants only utilize the PAR range (400nm–700nm) for photosynthesis. The Near-Infrared (NIR) spectrum (700nm–2500nm) provides zero photosynthetic value; it only provides heat.

At Bakway, we have moved beyond passive glazing. We utilize our 5-layer Italian OMIPA co-extrusion lines to integrate selective IR-reflective additives directly into the UV-cap layer. These additives act as a spectral filter: they maintain an 80%+ transmission in the PAR range while reflecting or absorbing up to 40% of the NIR energy. This results in a significant reduction in the SHGC, lowering the interior temperature by 5°C to 8°C compared to standard clear multiwall.

Thermal Resistance: Beyond the Twin-Wall Baseline

U-value is the other half of the OpEx equation. A standard 10mm twin-wall sheet has a U-value of roughly 3.0 W/m²K. In a 2026 energy market, that is unacceptable.

We utilize a high-density X-Structure (7-wall or 9-wall) geometry in our 16mm to 25mm sheets. By increasing the number of internal air chambers and utilizing a cross-braced X-profile, we drop the U-value to 1.1 W/m²K. This is approaching the thermal performance of a solid insulated wall while remaining completely translucent. Every 0.1 reduction in U-value translates to a measurable drop in seasonal heating and cooling costs. If you aren't calculating the ROI of your U-value over a 10-year lifespan, you aren't doing engineering; you're just buying plastic.

Condensation and Light Clipping: The Anti-Drip Factor

Surface tension is the enemy of light transmission. In high-humidity greenhouse environments, water beads up on the inner surface of the sheet. These droplets act as thousands of tiny prisms, reflecting light back out of the greenhouse—a phenomenon known as "Light Clipping."

Our Clean-Light™ Anti-Drip coating is a hydrophilic layer co-extruded on the inner skin. It forces the water to spread into a continuous, ultra-thin film. This prevents the "indoor rain" that spreads pathogens like Botrytis and, more importantly, ensures that the PAR transmission remains at peak levels even when the humidity hits 90%.

Structural Integrity: Notched Sensitivity and Hail

In 2026, extreme weather is no longer an "outlier" event. Standard multiwall sheets made with high percentages of regrind resin have shortened polymer chains, making them highly notch-sensitive. When a hailstone hits a brittle, recycled sheet, the energy isn't absorbed; it propagates a fracture.

We utilize 100% Virgin Covestro/SABIC resin specifically to maintain the polymer's ductility. Our multiwall structures are engineered to pass the Class 4 hail impact test (FM 4473), ensuring that a 50mm hailstone at terminal velocity doesn't result in a total facility shutdown.
