The MRT Problem: Why AC Can’t Fix a Bad Skylight Specification

Air conditioning is a bandage, not a cure. I’ve walked into too many high-end commercial atriums and "modern" office lounges where the HVAC is blasting at full capacity, yet the occupants are still sweating. The thermostat says 22°C, but the people feel like they’re sitting in an oven.

As an engineer, I know exactly why: Mean Radiant Temperature (MRT).

When you specify standard clear or even basic bronze polycarbonate for a large-scale roof, you are allowing the interior surface of that plastic to become a high-mass radiator. Even if the air is cool, the "longwave" infrared radiation emitted by the heated panel is hitting the skin of the people below. This is where most "heat-shield" plastics fail. They absorb the heat, but then they radiate it right back into the room.

Our latest Metallic-Infused Heat-Insulating PC Series at Bakway takes a different approach. We aren't just trying to block light; we’re managing the surface energy of the sheet.

Absorption vs. High-Albedo Reflection

The industry is flooded with "heat-absorbing" tints. These sheets use carbon-based pigments that soak up the sun’s energy. The result? The sheet itself hits 70°C or 80°C. In a high-humidity environment like Suzhou or any tropical coastal city, that thermal mass is a liability.

We’ve engineered a Metallic/Pearl Masterbatch that is co-extruded into the top skin using our 5-layer Italian OMIPA lines. This creates a high-albedo surface at the molecular level. Instead of the photons being absorbed and converted into heat within the polymer matrix, they are reflected back into the atmosphere before they can penetrate the core. This keeps the MRT of the interior surface significantly lower, meaning the HVAC system only has to cool the air, not fight a giant overhead heater.

The Diffusion Factor: Visual Comfort without the Glare

Standard clear sheets create "hard" light. When you add a heat-insulating layer, you often lose the aesthetic quality of the space. People don't want to work in a dark cave.

Our heat-insulating sheets are designed for Soft-Light Diffusion. The metallic particles act as microscopic mirrors, scattering the visible light transmission (VLT) in every direction. This eliminates the harsh "sun-spots" and glare that typically ruin computer screen visibility in office environments. You get a space that is bright, thermally stable, and visually "soft."

Structural Resilience: The Hidden Cost of Expansion

When a sheet gets hot—especially an absorbing-tint sheet—it expands. I’ve seen 10-meter panels buckle and pop out of their aluminum frames because the "heat-insulation" was achieved through absorption, leading to extreme thermal expansion (CTE).

By utilizing 100% Virgin Covestro/SABIC resin, we maintain the structural modulus of the sheet even at the high end of its operating temperature. Because our metallic-infused sheets reflect more energy and stay cooler than traditional tints, the total thermal movement is reduced. This puts less stress on your EPDM gaskets and prevents the "creaking" sounds that plague cheap, high-absorption installations.

Specifying for Human Performance

If you are an architect or a facility manager, stop looking at the "Light Transmission" percentage in isolation. You need to be asking for:

  1. The MRT Differential: How much cooler is the interior surface compared to standard tint?

  2. The T-Sol (Total Solar Transmission): What is the actual energy throughput?

  3. The Diffusion Haze: Will this space be comfortable for human eyes?

We manufacture these sheets 80km from Shanghai Port, and we ship them to projects where "livability" is the primary KPI. If your skylight is making the room uninhabitable, you didn't save money; you wasted a project.
