The Thermal Trap: Why Standard Clear Polycarbonate is Killing Your HVAC Budget

I’ve been looking at thermal scans of industrial skylights lately, and the data is brutal. Most architects specify "Clear" or "Bronze" multiwall polycarbonate to maximize natural light, but they completely ignore the Solar Heat Gain Coefficient (SHGC). By mid-afternoon, these buildings aren't just "bright"—they are thermal ovens.

In 2026, natural light shouldn't come with a 40°C cooling penalty. If you are still using standard sheets for large-scale glazing, you are fighting a losing battle against the sun. Here is the technical reality of why IR-Reflective (Heat-Insulating) PC is the only logical spec for the current climate.

The NIR Conflict: Light vs. Heat

The solar spectrum is a paradox. Plants and humans need Photosynthetically Active Radiation (PAR) and visible light (400nm-700nm). But we gain zero value from the Near-Infrared (NIR) spectrum (700nm-2500nm)—that is pure heat energy. Standard clear PC is a passive victim of NIR; it lets the heat in and traps it.

At Bakway, we utilize our 5-layer Italian OMIPA co-extrusion lines to embed selective IR-reflective additives directly into the UV-cap layer. These aren't just pigments; they are spectral filters. They reflect up to 45% of the NIR energy back into the atmosphere while maintaining 70-80% light transmission. For a 10,000 sqm warehouse, this translates to a 5°C to 8°C reduction in interior temperature. You stop cooling the air and start filtering the sun.

U-Value: The X-Structure Advantage

Heat gain is only half the problem. In the energy market of 2026, U-value (thermal resistance) is the metric that determines your profit margin. A standard twin-wall sheet is a thermal sieve.

We’ve moved our production toward X-Structure multiwall geometries (16mm to 25mm). By increasing the internal air chambers and using cross-braced ribs, we drop the U-value to 1.1 W/m²K. This level of insulation turns a transparent roof into a high-performance envelope, effectively decoupling your interior climate from the external heatwave.

The "Fake Tint" Trap

I see procurement teams buying "Heat-Shield" products that are just dark grey tints. Here is the trap: dark pigments absorb heat. The sheet itself gets hot (hitting 80°C), expands, and radiates that heat back into the building. Our metallic-infused IR sheets reflect the energy. The sheet stays cooler, which means less thermal expansion (CTE) and longer life for your EPDM gaskets.
